Milanes Photography bio picture

Cathi Milanes is a fun loving wedding photographer based in Atlanta, serving world wide.

She attended college in Florida where she majored and graduated with a degree in photography. She focused on weddings during her years there and interned on her free time during the weekends to learn the art of wedding photography.  Although she dabbled in other types of photography, she fell ultimately in love with the detail, architectural, portraiture, and photo journalistic opportunities a wedding brings.

On her free time she enjoys mountain biking, rafting, comedy clubs, playing tug of war with her dogs and keeping life simple.  She hates her own cooking and loves to try new things, so an occasional dinner out is one of her favorite past times.

Minashia & Nick’s Wedding . The Biltmore . Atlanta, GA

We love when our clients get featured on blogs and magazines.  Thank you to everyone involved!  We love you Nick and Minashia :)

How they met

Nick’s version

“We were at a mutual friends BBQ where I was the DJ. I spotted Minashia in the kitchen of the house and I immediately left the DJ booth and went to go catch her before she left the party. We began to talk as I walked her to her car.  I asked her for her number, called her right when I got home and talked all night long.”

Minashia’s version

“I had just moved from New York to Atlanta a few months ago and did not know many people outside of work. One of my long time friends that I just reconnected with invited me to a party and Nick was the DJ…he thought he was so cool..LOL…it was a futuristic Cinderella story….I went to leave and he conveniently wanted to walk me to the car. Since that night, we have been inseparable. I guess I had to move to the South to find my prince charming…”

Our favorite things to do together are cook and eat together, play with our dogs, spend quality time with each other, and spend time with our friends and families. Oh yeah, we also enjoy going to different restaurants around the city to try something different. I’m trying to get her to love Atlanta the way she loves New York…otherwise I might be moving!! :)

Champa & Daron. Hyatt Regency Wedding in Atlanta

Everyone who thinks getting married can be awesome, yet stressful, I challenge you to imagine doing it twice in one day!  Champa and Daron did just that! This is one of the most unique weddings I have ever photographed.  They first honored Champa’s traditional background with a beautiful Indian ceremony.  Both sides of the family and bridal party wore traditional Indian clothing that was brought from India specifically for their wedding.  After the ceremony, Champa changed into her white wedding dress, and everyone else into suits and traditional American brides maids dresses for the Christian ceremony.  It was a flawless transition that is well worth a story to tell.  It was an honor to capture it all.

How they met:

“So having seen a number of my friends go through online dating, be successful, and now have great marriages…I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try. However, after about 5 months of trying and not meeting anyone that quite fit my ideal partner, I was getting a bit discouraged. I was on Labor and Delivery Nights working at the hospital that time and my teammates, Courtney and Rebecca, would help me go through my matches and suggest potential dates. They noticed one guy who had messaged me a few days earlier and asked what I thought about him.
“Oh he’ll probably be like all the rest. Should I really go on another date only to be disappointed again?”
“No this guy looks really sweet and his message is cute. You should give him a chance” said Rebecca and Courtney.
“Ok fine I’ll try one last time”
I remember approaching The Chocolate Bar (a local dessert bar in Decatur) still a bit hesitant and nervous. As I entered, I saw a handsome guy smile, stand up, and reach out to shake my hand. Then in a deep voice with a cute Southern accent, he said, “Hi I’m Daron. Nice to meet you.”
After that moment I lost track of time. And here we are…”  – Champa

“The first time I saw her, I immediately loved her smile and her eyes.  I love her laugh and happy personality.  I love how driven she is in her career and her thirst for knowledge.  I also love the fact that while she and I come from very different backgrounds, there is one thing that is very much the same, and that’s the importance of family” – Daron

“I love his humor, thoughtfulness, intelligence, and that sexy southern accent :) “- Champa

Christina & Jeremy. Renaissance Hotel Engagement in Midtown Atlanta

Jeremy: Christina and I have known each other since High School.  We are both from Mobile, AL where we frequently ran into each other at sporting events, proms, and social gatherings. However, at that time I was just “Jeremy York, the football player from Blount High School” (per Christina) and she was “short lil pretty Christina at Leflore High”.  Back then, we ran in some of the same circles but we would just casually speak and never really had a one on one conversation.  She had my interest even back then. I always wanted to know her better. We ran into each other her freshman year at Auburn University (2002) and my sophomore year at Tuskegee University (15 miles down the road) at a college party in Auburn, Alabama.  I approached her to say hello and began a conversation where I finally got up the nerve to ask for her phone number. She did give me her number and I felt excited! I thought this was going to be my opportunity to get to know her and possibly the beginning of a courtship since we were so close by to one another. However, after one or two phone conversations we didn’t do so well keeping in contact and each moved on with our busy lives.

Christina:  I liked Jeremy and thought he was a cute nice guy but he was from my hometown! Lol…I felt like I already sort of knew “Jeremy from home”  and at the time I was more intrigued with making new friends with all of the new people around me at my new college…lol (I feel so bad now) So needless to say our conversations fizzled out…

J: Christina ended up moving to Houston, TX and I took a job in Birmingham.  In the Spring of 2009, I was on a business trip to Houston and met up with a mutual friend of ours at Dave and Busters where I inquired of her and ask how she was doing. (We were facebook friends and had kept in touch here and there) He informed me that she was doing fine and so I ask him to tell her I said hello. In the meantime, I went back to Birmingham and began to express my interest of her to some of her friends from high school that lived in Birmingham. In July of the same year, (unknown to me) she relocated to Atlanta.

C: I was informed of Jeremy’s “hello” and also of his interest but by this time, he had enjoyed his fraternity days and college days and earned a reputation as a “ladies man” or so I thought, so I had my reservations to say the least.

J: With the help of her high school friends, we reunited at an after-party in Birmingham, Alabama during the Magic City Classic weekend.

C: I remember telling my friends that night that I would go ahead and hear him out so that they would leave me alone about it. I saw Jeremy playing in his phone like he was trying to stall coming to talk to me. I thought to myself “after all these messages and talking to my friends he is not gonna say anything.” So I went over and said “hey Jeremy”. He said hey, gave me a hug, asked a few questions, and then asked me for my phone number so that we could keep in touch now that I was in Atlanta. As soon as he got my number, he left the party. I thought to myself “Figures…I knew he wasn’t serious.”

J: When the opportunity presented itself at the after-party, Christina was having such a good time dancing in VIP, I didn’t want to interrupt her groove, so I thought I would sit back and wait on the song to end before I step to her.  But, as she mentioned, she grabbed my attention while I was in the middle of sending a text message or stalling as she puts it.  In actuality, my main objective for the night was to meet her at the party and exchange contact information.  I had family in town and didn’t want to stay out late, so when the mission was accomplished I calmly departed the building.  After our small conversation, I knew there was so much more I wanted to say to her, but the party just wasn’t the appropriate time.  As I drove home that night, I couldn’t help but reflect on the night of my sophomore year of college when we exchanged numbers the first time.  I thought to myself, “This time I’m not going to let her slip away.  I’m going to show her the REAL me.”  Needless to say, I called her the very next night and we stayed on the phone for 3 hours.  Two weeks later I asked her to be with me.

“The Proposal”

Christina’s best friend’s father had a birthday party in Mobile, AL over the Christmas holidays in 2009, so the next year I asked her best friend to inform Christina that her dad would have another party.   I rented an exclusive room at Café Royal in Mobile, Alabama with family and close friends for December 24, 2010.  I arranged for our immediate family members to arrive at Café Royal around 7pm.  I knew I would stall so that everyone would have time to mingle and enjoy the hors d’oeuvres that I ordered.  Christina was under the impression that her mom, dad, and brother were going to Mr. Ball’s birthday dinner, so as they prepared to leave her house she called me asking if I would like to meet her at the dinner instead of coming to pick her up.  She informed me that Mrs. Ball, Cherise’s mom, had called her to tell her not to be late.  I politely responded to Christina saying, “No I’m almost dressed and I would prefer you to ride with me.”  So needless to say, I was late picking Christina up from her house and I was so nervous that I didn’t walk her down the steps after she locked the front door.  After she brought to my attention how rude I was, I grabbed her by the hand and escorted her to my car.  As we journeyed our way to Café Royal, I got an ear full of how we were not to be late to this function.  I was so nonchalant in receiving this information from her and she couldn’t understand why.

We finally arrive and I open the front door to the restaurant and there are about 20 tables nicely set with white table cloths and glasses.  The lighting in the room was dimmed at a medium level with a nice romantic feel.  Christina asked me where in the world is everybody.  I didn’t answer her and proceeded to walk to the back of the restaurant to a separate room sectioned off on the side.  As I opened the door, you could see about 15 people sitting down with rose petals decorated on the dinner tables and the floor.  I suddenly began to announce, “I would like to apologize for keeping everyone waiting. “  Christina then squeezes my hand and whispers to me, “what in the world are you doing? Everyone is staring.” (Thinking this is Mr. Ball’s birthday dinner and I don’t know the invited guest well enough to be making an announcement.) I continue my speech, “So I gathered everyone here this evening to witness me express my love for Christina.”  I then walked to the love seat to sit Christina down as a good friend of mine, Ketria Archible, began to serenade us in “I Believe in you and me” by Whitney Houston.  After she finished singing, I got on one knee and said these words, “Christina, I love you with all my heart and there isn’t anyone on this earth that I would rather be with or want to spend the rest of my life with.  Will you marry me?”…she responded with tears in her eyes, yes!  By this time she had noticed her mom, dad, brother, best friend, my grandmother, and everyone else in the room.  She was so surprised!  The waitress brought glasses of champagne and everyone gathered around us and made a toast and with well wishes.  This was truly a night we will never forget.

Kayla & Kyle . Waldorf Astoria Engagement & Church Street Station Wedding in Orlando, FL

Kayla & Kyle were an adorable match made at work.  Who said you can’t mix work with pleasure?  It might get you in trouble, or it might get you a soul mate.  It was obviously a chance worth taking, and probably one they could not avoid. They both love cats, she loves the color purple, and he doesn’t seem to mind missing football Sunday.

I enjoyed photographing their engagement at the Waldorf Astoria, close to Disney.  Their wedding was a couple of months later in downtown Orlando at Church Street Station.  They were such an easy going carefree loving couple and weren’t afraid to show it in front of the camera.  Thank you Kayla and Kyle.

Arielle & Jeremy . King Plow Engagement in Atlanta

“Jeremy is the most amazing guy I’ve ever met.”

“She and I have more fun than anyone else I know.”

“Both of our friends tried to set each one of us up on a blind date with each other (two different friends, and completely independently).  Both of us were completely stubborn and refused to go on any blind dates.”

One day, Arielle decided it was time to get herself a puppy.  A friend of hers had a puppy that needed a home and they arranged for Arielle to stop by to pick up the puppy.  Jeremy happened to live in the same building as her friend and was invited up to meet the puppy and Arielle.

“A few casual hang outs later, a first date to one of the world’s worst sushi restaurants, and Jeremy’s masterful culinary skills (to make up for the terrible sushi), and the rest is history.”

“I know that he is going to make the most amazing father one day.”

“She is a kind and compassionate person who cares about everyone else first.”

Arielle and Jeremy are getting married next weekend at the W Buckhead and I can’t wait to photograph their special day!

Tracey & Justin . The Peachtree Club Wedding in Atlanta

“We met in college in 1998.”

Tracey and Justin had something in common long before they met that they never knew…Their aunts were best friends.  They both decided to attend college at AUC in Atlanta, GA before they ever met.  When both of their aunts realized they were going to the same college they arranged for Tracey and Justin to meet at orientation.  Tracey decided she was going to skip out on the arranged meeting but fate kicked in regardless.  A couple of days later she met Justin through a mutual friend.

They remained friends throughout college and after graduation Tracey decided to move to New York.  ” A few years after graduation we reconnected and Justin began visiting me in New York.  The rest is history.”

“I love that with Tracey I can do anything.  She is sweet and sassy. She keeps me on my toes and is fun to be around.”

“I love that Justin is thoughtful, funny, and a family man. He gives me the greatest sense of joy and is my best friend.”

Kerry & Ross . Biltmore Wedding in Atlanta

Ive always considered myself to be somewhat of an old soul.  When I was a little girl, kids my age were watching Duck tails while I watched I Love Lucy reruns.  I didn’t like cartoons,  I wrote all of my school papers on Grace Kelly and Lucille Ball, and now in my 20′s I can sing along to almost every single oldie on the radio.

Kerry and Ross’s wedding was right up my alley.  Their style reminded me of old Hollywood. They chose red, black and white as their colors and hired an awesome Jazz band to play at their reception.  They were an easy going simple and happy couple that seemed totally comfortable in their skin.  I was in the middle of photographing Ross and his groomsmen when they all started snapping and singing in a little circle.  It was highly entertaining and totally unexpected.  I thought “wow, this couple REALLY is into music”.  The guys sounded great and looked like they were having a fun time.  Kerry later decided to take stage at the reception and sing him a song.  She was also full of talent.  I thought to myself  “the couple that sings together stays together”.  Thank you Kerry and Ross for being amazing and for creating an environment I could totally appreciate!

Devin & Fay . Charleston, S.C. Engagement

Devin and Fay are the type that know exactly what they want.  When I met with these love birds they pulled out a magazine with a couple of images they were inspired by that had beautiful big mossy trees.  I immediately was excited by the idea and asked where the pictures were taken.  They said Charleston S.C.  and my response was “Lets go to Charleston!”.   It was as simple as that.  I’m a sucker for fun trips to places I have never been and for giving couples just what they are envisioning.  With some research we came across this beautiful location and decided it was the one,  Magnolia Plantation.

Devin and Fay showed up dressed perfectly.  Their color choices fit in well with the color palette of the nature around us and they did an amazing job in front of the camera.  On the other hand, the weather was not as perfect.  You might not be able to really tell, but it decided to start raining when we began to shoot.  Thank goodness we had two umbrellas.  My wonderful assistant ran back and forth handing them umbrellas between shots so they could stay as dry as possible while trying to hold lighting in place and an umbrella over me so that the equipment stays dry.  It was quite a production, but I was not about to allow the rain to stop us from getting what we all came there for.  The rain would come and go, soft enough for us to shoot in, then hard enough to make us stand under trees for cover.  Thank you Devin and Fay for being such great sports regardless of the weather.  I think it was worth it!

Megan & Kevin . Vizcaya Engagement in Miami, FL.

When I first met with Megan and Kevin, they were in town from Florida visiting GA for some wedding planning.  Unlike other destination wedding couples doing research, they decided they were going to camp out on this trip.  Immediately, I loved their way of doing things.   I soon realized this was just who they always were.  They both love to travel and be outdoors with nature.  Feeling like I could relate, it was quite simple to understand and connect with them.

Megan and I were throwing around ideas for their engagement session through emails when she mentioned she wanted a “Vizcaya” like feel to her pictures.  Vizcaya is a mansion/museum in Miami, FL that has acres of beautiful landscaping.  After careful thought and planning, I decided we should just make the trip to the original Vizcaya and give Megan her dream engagement session.  The drive and her happiness was totally worth it!
